Internship evaluation
IULIANA GOROVEI
Construction Architect, Internship from August 2019 – January 2020
Describe your school and field of study:
I am a student at UCL Erhvervsakademi og Professionshøjskole Odense in the Architectural Technology and Construction Management study program. As the name indicates is all about the building process from proposal faze to the completion of the construction and it lasts for 3,5 years.
Why did you apply for an internship at DOMUS?
First time when I heard about DOMUS I was on my 3rd semester and one of my friends was at the time an intern here, was always telling me about it so it made me curious to find out more. When I started applying for internship, I was looking mostly for small companies where I would have the opportunity to work at several projects, face different challenges and were my poor Danish will not be an inconvenient. It turned that Domus was what I was looking for and also one of the first companies that I applied to.
What kind of assignments and tasks have you worked with during your internship at DOMUS?
Since the start I got involved in projects with different assignments. Until the end of my internship I took part in quite a few, involving teamwork. The projects were about new construction but also renovation. As for my tasks, I was creating 2D and 3D models, preparing floor plans, working with designs for the different type of buildings.
Describe the difference between studying and working as an intern at DOMUS?
For the first time, I was not rushed to move as fast as possible to a task/stage as it was happening in school. I was able to work in my rhythm and still finish in time. I was guided and received all the information and explanations required to understand what I had to do and how. In school, more than once while working on my tasks I felt like ‘flying blind’, not knowing what comes next. Another difference is that I no longer had to go through the entire building process instead I got assigned to a specific part. I felt more responsible for what I
was doing.
What did you learn at DOMUS?
Before starting I was nervous and insecure because of the lack of experience but also because I felt very unprepared. In the end it all worked in my favor. I have worked with professional that took their time in showing me how things are done, I had the chance to learn and work with new (new to me) software, to see the difference between the programs and what I can do with them. I have seen what my limits are so far and what I must do in future. As a plus I improved little bit my Danish skills.
Did the internship change your perspective on the building industry?
I would say, yes. I am coming from a background that has nothing to do with construction or architecture, therefor I had a lot of gaps and now most of them had been covered. I have acquired experience and I can say I would like to work in this field.
Did the internship expose you to unknown areas within the building industry or unexpected interests?
Since the construction industry is in constant development there are always new area and aspects to explore so yes. I had the chance to see and explore different areas that were new and unknown to me. Within these new areas I have also found the topic for my bachelor thesis.
Which skills did you acquire during your internship at DOMUS?
The most important acquirement in the experience, the collaboration, the teamwork and the communication skills were improved. My drawing skills had also got better.
